The Colonial Fire at Put-in-Bay

A few minutes after the fire started the building was fully involved in flames. This photo was made with a 4x5 camera and has a great amount of detail as evidenced by the inset photo. A 20"x 30" copy of this photo is on display at the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society Museum at Put-in-Bay.

In the early afternoon of Friday, May 27, 1988, a devastating fire consumed the entire 1905 Colonial Dance Hall. The historic wood framed building, which housed a number of businesses over the years including a bowling alley and the famous Beer Barrel saloon, had a 18,000 square foot dance hall on the second floor. It was also used as a roller skating rink at one time. Within 45 minutes the historic building was reduced to rubble.
